Band of the West Participates in Texas Trash-Off by SrA Lenora Plotkin 502ABW/MD 4/11/2010 - SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- On April 10, nine members of the Band of the West participated in the annual Adopt-A-Highway Don't Mess With Texas Trash-Off. The group spent approximately two hours picking up litter along a two mile stretch of FM 1957 in San Antonio. Together, the group collected 15 bags of trash and other debris. The Don't Mess with Texas Trash-Off is the single largest one day cleanup event in the state and serves as Texas' signature event for the Great American Cleanup, the nation's largest community improvement program. The Don't Mess with Texas Trash-Off is part of the Texas Department of Transportation's litter prevention program, which includes Don't Mess with Texas, Adopt-a-Highway, and a grassroots partnership with Keep Texas Beautiful. The Band of the West has participated in the Adopt-A-Highway program for several years, and members participate in a clean-up of the band's designated area four times a year. Since September 2008, band volunteers have removed over 200 bags of trash from FM 1957 in San Antonio.
